Prolog

About a week ago, February 4th to 5th 2012 for exact, Nokia and Microsoft held a very spectacular event called “Amazing Nokia Lumia Developer Day: Coding Lumia 24 Hours”. This event was held to welcome the official presence of the two brand new Nokia Lumia line-up which are Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710, as well as aligning the ecosystem development of the latest Microsoft mobile software platform called Windows Phone that’s powering the Nokia Lumia devices. This free program aimed to attract developers to develop applications and to introduce this new promising mobile platform.

This event was jarringly huge! more than 800 developers from various regions of Indonesia attended this event and its dominated by a large amount of participants from West Java Regional and Jabodetabek since this event was held in Bandung, at Graha Manggala Siliwangi auditorium. I was predicting that the number of the audience will be lessen before the midnight of the first day, because most of the audience were a newbie programmers and students who might not familiar yet in writing some codes consistently for 24 hours. But I was wrong, there was no significant change in terms of number. Almost all seats are still filled up by the participants, they are astonishingly still wake up following the seminars, workshops, and the competition until the next morning. Thanks for the well-organized break time, the never ending delicious food and beverage supply, and of course the passion of both participants and the speakers. Smile

So that was a little bit prolog of this post, in the next following paragraph, I will tell my excitement as a co-trainer of this remarkable event.

Microsoft Student Partner: Call of Duty

Less than a year and a half ago,  I was recommended by my senior to be his successor as one the of the Microsoft Student Partner of Telkom Institute of Technology. I’ve got a lot of  interesting experiences and opportunities since I’m awarded as an MSP. It’s been very exciting. I always feel inspired by meeting some of the top-notch students and developers around Indonesia and working with them as team is really motivating. I could say that this event –Amazing Nokia Lumia Developer Day, is the most remarkable event I’ve ever participated as an MSP. I feel so empowered, working as a team with MSP has never been so cooperative like what have been done in this event. We were very solid and still solid. I thought that we’ve been like a family. Big family. It was really fun that the delightful excitement still  feels up to several days later. Open-mouthed smile

So this excitement begin when every MSP Indonesia received this following email…

MSP

the email was received on 31st of January 2012, lest than a week from the event. Even it seemed very late, I felt that this event would be a catastrophic success! without wasting my time to think and consider it, I immediately applied the position. And the next 2 days since the last time we –the MSP, received the email, this following briefing notification dropped off in our inbox explaining the job description…

Agenda

As we can see, our jobs were really tightly scheduled from the evening until the next morning . But it didn’t lessen my will, so did the other MSPs. Because it’s our responsibility and we’re really passionate about it. The event was actually started from the morning which filled-up with seminars. In the evening,  the participants should get their hand dirty with code until next morning which forced them not to sleep.

A night before the developer day, some of the MSPs from West java Regional were invited by Narenda WicaksonoNokia Outreach Manager South East Asia, to attend a casual meeting in  d’palm restourant briefing the event agenda and distributing the testing device that have been promised to be loaned to the trainer and co-trainer: The Nokia Lumia 710.

When the device is handed to me, I was very curious because it was the first time I see and hold the Lumia 710, It’s not yet released in Indonesia since it’s expected to be launched on February 17th 2012. The phone feel a bit plasticy but solid, I’ve got black color Lumia 710 with black back cover some MSPs got cyan back cover but I think the black color looks more masculine. As expected, the Windows Phone OS is quite zippy. It’s really fast. Once I login to my social media and email account, everything’s done. No need contact transfer what so ever. Even though it’s a loaned device, I can’t help my self to do some hands-on by integrating all my social media and email account, We were prohibited to use other phone aside from Nokia brand or WIndows Phone throughout the event anyways. So I think it wasn’t not a big deal if I constantly check my social media update via the new Lumia 710 Smile with tongue out

The Amazing Day

The next morning, Cahyo and I arrived in Graha Maggala Siliwangi 10 minutes before 09.00 AM. We met our gorgeous boss Anggi Shena Permata, –Program Manager at Microsoft Indonesia, to get a quick brief and we also met  Irving Hutagalung –Audience Marketing Manager at Microsoft Indonesia, to get our device developer unlocked by him, so the participants can test their apps by utilizing the Lumia device. A couple minutes later, other MSPs arrived to the venue. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a gathering room, so we all get briefed by Puja Pramudya near the back door.

About an hours later, the participants began to arrive. The hundreds of provided seat almost full. Most of them looked very rhapsodically fascinated. The venue was great by the way, the EO have done a great job there. Every participant got a Lumia goody bag containing Puja’s Windows Phone book in Bahasa, name tag, and some stationaries.

Before the sessions began, Puja asked me to review the seat of participant and helped him to divide it into 10 regions based on the number labeled on the table. It took about 10 minutes for me to coverage it all since the room was really large. I gave the region map to Puja then he called every MSP join him discussing the mapping. One or two MSP must handle a region which might consist of about 70-80 participants. Sure it was a big number to handle, but we were still exciting. So Cahyo and I got the 8th region, but in last minute briefing before the Coding 24 hours session began, I asked Puja to switch Cahyo and I with other MSP to handle the 8th region, because most of 8th region participants were from my campus, I’m afraid that We could biased the competition judgment when curating the apps that made by the participants since We are student from the same school. So for last minutes change, We got the 2nd region.

For identity, MSP got ‘Will Code For Food’ T-shirt but it turns out that many participants were wearing the same t-shirt. I think it’s because Microsoft have organized many events on campus before and the t-shirts were the souvenir. So after lunch, every MSP got this awesome Nokia long t-shirt, it looks really cool, It’s covered by my favorite lucid blue with solid black long sleeve. Somehow I was feeling thrilled and excited at the same time when wearing this t-shirt maybe because there’s an epic phrase that reads “Coding in Progress” in the front of the t-shirt. It felt so fascinating, I can still feel the excitement when reminiscing it. Open-mouthed smile

During the seminar session, every MSP was handed a USB flash drive containing all the course and requisite installer which have to be distributed to every participants. Even though our main job were supposed to be in the evening, We were still have to help the participants in the morning if they’ve got a problem during toolkit installation or got an error when they were trying to follow the instruction given by the speakers.

This event took place smoothly, most of participants were still wake up and looked focus to their monitor and IDE. Some participants need be guided but some of them were a pro. After hours of hacking and coding, a grand total of 173 apps were submitted, which were then reviewed and dwindled down to 21 apps by the MSPs to be judged for the prize –The brand new Lumia 800. With Narenda Wicaksono (Developer Operation Manager of Nokia Indonesia as well as Nokia Outreach Manager in South East Asia), Irving Hutagalung (Audience Marketing Manager, Microsoft Indonesia), and Puja Pramudya (Microsoft Valuable Professional & master trainer for the event) as the judges, they eventually announced 8 winners. The winners were: BuzzleMall, CitizenHero, TheGarbager, GogoKeto, Movieblist, ShelterView, Spothemall, and Puppet Solitaire. The winners all come from developers from universities such as the Bandung Institute of Technology, IT Telkom, and the University of Indonesia.

From my region –The 2nd region, I proposed 3 apps from 21 apps submission as consideration for the judges and it turns out that one of them –ShelterView, became the winner. ShelterView is an app that helps user to see at glance how crowded the Transjakarta everytime the users open the app. This app streams the latest image from every ip cam that installed in user-selected Transjakarta Shelter. The image itself is updated for every 10 seconds. This simple app could be very useful when the user considering whether use Transjakarta or other public transport. This app made by Ahmad Tamimi, student for UIN Jakarta.

I was glad that one of my fellow in ProClub and Game Development Community of Telkom Institute of Technology –Alfi Hanif Noor, won a Nokia Lumia 800 too. He made a great game called CitizenHero, a tower-defense like game with local content. The art was decent, I never thought that he made it in such little amount of time. Congratulation mate! Smile

Twisting. Out of Script!

As I said before, the Nokia Lumia 710 was a loaned device for the co-trainer to help the participants testing their app. But it turns out that Narenda made a astonishing announcement behind the stage. He gave the Nokia Lumia 710 to every co-trainer –The MSPs. The event suddenly become amazing literally. The terms and conditions were not really difficult. We only have to make 3 apps to change the loaned status to be ours. So we actually entered the second phase of ‘Amazing Nokia Lumia Apps Challenge’, a continued program for the participants and other developer who didn’t attend that was announced as a contest to build a prototype of application with the Windows Phone SDK and register it before the March 31st deadline. If the app is approved, a Nokia Lumia 710 will be sent to developer address for testing purposes. Then after 30 days the app must be published to the Windows Phone Marketplace; and if the developer have published 3 apps before June 30, 2012, the Nokia Lumia 710 will be theirs to keep. Smile

Besides that, Firstman Marpaung –Nokia Indonesia Community Enthusiast President, was made unpredictable announcement at the end of the event. He expressed his gratitude for every single team that has been working passionately into this event, including the MSP. He invited us to join him on stage facing the hundreds amazing developers and let us to introduce our self. It was surely not on script and I didn’t see that coming. it’s been an honor for me and other MSPs. For me, his announcement was turned to be the epic ending of this amazing event. Thank you Sir! Smile

Epilog

I can’t remember how many hours I spent to get my body recovered from fatigue. The only thing I remember is that I woke up in the late afternoon of February 5th checking email from my phone and got this email from Puja…

email

So immediately replied it with a paragraph of thanking, so did the others MSPs. Then the most remarkable email reply was came from Narenda Wicaksono who sent this inspiring email…

email2

Suddenly I felt that my energy was completely restored reading his email. I couldn’t help my self not to smile at it. He only replied with a couples of lines but it has very deep meaning. It felt like I could feel his passion to local developer. No wonder he has been one of my role model. Thank you for showing me your passion sir, it’s really inspiring.

From this point, I can say that every sweat drop that has been excreted for this event has turned to be something that my future self would be proud of. Thank you all. I’m really looking forward to work together again someday Smile

Warm Regards,
